Be Strong and Courageous and a Little Contagious

This morning, I was looking up verses online to encourage a friend.  Wouldn't you know it, the Lord encouraged me on the way ;)
I was reading Joshua 1:1-9.  It' a portion of scripture where Joshua is appointed to lead the people after Moses' death.  Read some of the things that God told Joshua...

v3  Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you...
v5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.

v5  I will not leave you or forsake you.
6Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.
7Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.
8This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but  you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
9Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Amazing. I believe the same promises are true for us.  THREE times in three scriptures He tells Joshua to be strong and courageous.   I looked up the word "STRONG"  in Hebrew as it relates to this verse. (check out this cool site for Bible study  www.biblos.com).

Definition:
to be or grow firm or strong, strengthen

The thing I really like about the definition is that it says "to be or GROW firm or strong."  Many of us  may not feel "strong and courageous".  Many of us don't feel like leaders -it's not in our blood, we're introverts, we're too scared of what people think, we don't know what to say, we may be too vulnerable...  But guess what?  God's desire is to GROW us.  Was Jesus a leader?  Um. yea.  Does the Bible say to be Christlike?  Um. yea.  Does God say He can help us with that?  Um.  Totally.  For sure.

I know this is a long list of words, but I was so encouraged by some of it's meaning (particularly the ones underlined).   These words show up when you look up the word Strong in Strong's Exhaustive Concordance:
aid, amend, catch, cleave, confirm, be constant, constrain, A primitive root; to fasten upon; hence, to seize, be strong (figuratively, courageous, causatively strengthen, cure, help, repair, fortify), obstinate; to bind, restrain, conquer -- aid, amend,  catch, cleave, confirm, be constant, constrain, continue, be of good (take) courage(-ous, -ly), encourage (self), be established, fasten, force, fortify, make hard, harden, help, (lay) hold (fast), lean, maintain, play the man, mend, become (wax) mighty, prevail, be recovered, repair, retain, seize, be (wax) sore, strengthen (self), be stout, be (make, shew, wax) strong(-er), be sure, take (hold), be urgent, behave self valiantly, withstand.

My prayer today is that you and I would be like Joshua.  Appointed by the Lord to work in a mighty way for the kingdom.  That we wouldn't look left or look right but that we would be strong and courageous, standing firm-established-constant-encouraged-wherever God has us.    So if you're living your faith under a rock, get out.  Be strong and courageous.  Be contagious.

  1. I worried when I first started my blog about whether or not I should write about my faith. After all, I originally started my blog for my home business. I spoke to my biz sponsor (also Christian) about the work/faith separation. She told me that she felt that if 'God wasn't in it, he wasn't going to bless it'. That was all I needed. I still worry from time to time what others are thinking about what I'm writing, as I'm in network blogs on facebook. My blog gets broadcast to all my 'friends', who aren't all 'religious'. I have to keep focused on God and speaking for him....I never know who I might touch by speaking my mind. My hubby encourages me frequently saying that 'I am helping someone somewhere'. I have so evolved from a 'business blogger'. Awesome reminder....great post.

Found you at voiceboks...you have a new follower! Have a blessed day!

  2. Tina, I love this post! I can so relate to it on this very day too. This is the exact scripture our Pastor's sermon was on during church today and God used it to speak directly to my heart about an issue I've been struggling with recently. I LOVE how He does that. He just makes His presence so boldly known to me, right when I need Him most. On the very subject I need to hear about the most. And He didn't finish with me at church. He sent me to your blog too as additional reinforcement and confirmation of His message - His truth. Thank you for posting this.

    Many Blessings,
    Rosann

P.S. Thanks for stopping by to visit my blog and for your comment.
