One Yard Blunder and Etsy Freebie

Monday, Monday.
Usually I do my video blog on Mondays, but I don't see that happening today with three kiddles running around etc. etc.  Today I am going to share with you my one yard blunder.

A while ago, my aunt asked me to make her a little bag for the gym to house her ipod, phone, id, etc. etc.   Have you heard of the book "One Yard Wonders"?  I bought it a year ago and have made a couple of things out of it with no problem.  I found this little bag (Hands Free Belt Bag) in there and thought it would be perfect for my aunts needs minus the belt holder.    This weekend, I gave it a go.  I have enough fabric to drape the windows of Westminster Abbey, but I still couldn't resist the fabric I found for this from Hobby Lobby :)

I'm not going to mince words.  This bag was the most FRUSTRATING thing I've made in recent memory.  The directions were HORRIBLE.  Let me just say, it's the first tutorial where I've seen the word "gusset" and if I see that word again, I'm going to run and hide.  I learn best visually and there were no pictures to guide along.

So cute and innocent on the outside...

I was so proud of myself for creating the ID pocket.  It was my aunts idea.  It took a while to figure out the best way to get it on, make it look good etc. etc.  After all that work, I sewed the panel to the bag upside down.  What an I to the DIOT.
I had to come up with a clever way to keep the flap up because it was too late for me to seam rip and sew in again.

My attempt at fixing the mistake.

The way they tell you to sew the lining in makes absolutely NO SENSE whatsoever.  As you can see, I pinched my fabric sewing in the lining.

I tried to come up with my own way but it obviously didn't work.  Krikey.  I tried to bind the edge of my lining before sewing it in.  It slipped out without me noticing.  That means I have to seam rip and try again.  I'm sweating now.  I don't curse.  But if I did, it would be pg-13 at least.

Here's what I said when I saw that I did this:  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Look at her.  Laughing at me.  Mocking me.  I'm no Tina Bradley.  That's for sure.

On a lighter note, I'm doing an etsy freebie this summer.  Now through August, all purchases made through my etsy site will come with one of these cute paper clippy book marks.  I saw the paper clips with flags on another site (don't remember which one) and I decided to make my own version.

I found these cute circle clips and sewed some scraps on.  I usually dog ear my book pages because I don't have bookmarks.  Or I use whatever slip of paper is lying around.   No more, I say!  No more!  I will be adding more fun goodies to my etsy shop this summer, so check back often!

Now I'm going to get back to seam ripping and then hopefully put this one yard blunder to bed.

  1. I have that book too and the instructions are awful. I think you have to do a practice item and then fix the directions and make the final version with good fabric. Most frustrating sewing book I have ever read! But the projects are really cute. And short one yard projects are always enticing.

  2. It's still cute! I know the taunting feeling all to well!

  3. I like the idea but I think I would have looked at it and done it my own way. Especially when it led to you having to swear! Can't tell you the number of things I've sewn beautifully- upside down, inside out, you name it. It's never the same when I get it right because I've usually lost the desire by the time I do it again and I just want it done!

  4. Sparkling. I totally should have. In fact by the time I tried to do it my way, it was kind of too late.
PS: I didn't swear (out loud anyway!), I just felt like it ;)

  5. Thanks for inviting us to your linky party! We are your newest followers!

  6. That's so frustrating. I saw this book at the book store last week. I was soooo close to getting it. I guess I'm glad I didn't. For all the frustrations, the outside really does look cute.

  7. Gusset, that word is horrid, for some reason it has no place in a sewing book! Some patterns are just so un-necessarily difficult, I tried one the other day and just couldn't get it right, ended up throwing it and having a little hissy fit!

  8. Ok seriously - I laughed out loud at this. Sorry for your horrible experience, but I have SOOO BEEN THERE! Thanks for sharing this! lol. Oh BTW I LOVE the fabric!!!

  9. This is the CUTEST bag and I cannot WAIT to use it. Maybe it is horrible for me to continue to say "Aww Tina, I'm sorry" and think "This bag is soo cute HOW can I get her to make me another one?", but I can't help myself!

Tina, You are the best! Thanks for my custom made bag! I LOVE it!
    Auntie Karen
